Prominents & Kittens (Notodontidae)
Species
Moths in this family are furry and stout-bodied, in many cases with rather long, tapering forewings which are normally held quite close to the body when at rest. The trailing edges of the wings of some species has prominent projections which are raised over the back when the moth is resting with closed wings. The adults are unable to feed, and are seldom seen by day, but they come to light traps (especially males). The antennae are relatively long, and obvious in both sexes. Wing markings are subtle and cryptic, which help them blend with bark and dead leaves. This family also includes processionary moths, whose larvae have become significant pests of forest and amenity trees in Europe. The larval hairs of these species are toxic.
