Hairstreaks (Theclinae)
Species
The Lycaenidae family is a group of small butterflies more commonly known as Blues (sub-family Polyommatinae), Coppers (sub-family Lycaeninae) and Hairstreaks (sub-family Theclinae). Hairstreaks are mainly tree-dwelling butterflies, and most never show their upper wing surfaces at rest. The sexes are generally similar.
 
Five species have been recorded in Britain:
  • Black Hairstreak: very restricted distribution between Peterborough and Oxford
  • Brown Hairstreak: found in the southern half of England and Wales
  • Green Hairstreak: found throughout most of Britain
  • Purple Hairstreak: mostly found in the southern half of England and Wales
  • White-letter Hairstreak: mainly found in southern and central England, and east Wales
