Swifts (Hepialidae)
Species
The Hepialidae are primitive moths. All five British species have elongated wings that are held almost vertically against the body at rest. Their main flight period is from early dusk to full darkness. They come to light traps and house lights. Adults are incapable of feeding. The larvae live underground, feeding on plant roots. The life cycle typically takes two years to complete, with the larva over-wintering twice.
