Description

Family: Noctuidae

Wing span: 22 - 24mm

This is a small noctuid, and can be mistaken for a micro. The diagnostic feature is a whiteish patch towards the trailing corner of the blackish-grey and brownish fore-wing, not reaching the leading edge. It is usually edged in white.

It can be found in most of England as far north as Yorkshire and Lancashire, and in south, west and north-west Wales.

Habitats are woodland, grassy heathland and moorland, most frequently on acidic or neutral soils.

There is one generation per year, from late May to July. It over-winters as a pupa in a cocoon just below ground level.

Larvae feed on grasses such as Purple Moor-grass and False Brome.

Adults rest on trees, fences and vegetation during the day, and fly when disturbed. They come to light.
