(1/500th sec at f11. © David Hastings) Description Family: Noctuidae Wing span: 30 - 34mm This species is named after the saddle-shaped black mark in the centre of the forewing, which is thought to resemble a character in the Hebrew alphabet. No other spring moth has a mark like this. It is found throughout the British Isles. It can be found in almost any habitat. There is one generation from March to mid-May in the south, and April to early June in the north. There can be a partial emergence in the autumn. It over-winters as a pupa in an underground cocoon. Larvae feed on a wide range of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. It comes to light and sugar, often flying very late in the night, even in cold conditions. It feeds at sallow catkins.
