Description

Family: Noctuidae

Wing span: 26 - 34mm

This species is recognised by its round-tipped forewing, with large, rounded, pale-outlined oval and kidney marks. It is extremely variable in ground colour, but is always some shade of brown. The outer cross-line is generally distinct.

It is common and well-distributed in most of the British Isles.

It occurs in most lowland habitats, but is most abundant in woodland.

There is one generation from March to May. It can sometimes be found in mild spells in late autumn and winter. It over-winters as a pupa in an underground cocoon.

Larvae feed on a wide range of broad-leaved trees and shrubs.

It comes to light, often in abundance, and feeds at sallow catkins and blackthorn flowers.
