Description

Family: Geometridae

Wing span: 16 - 22mm

The bold, black V-shaped mark near the leading edge of an otherwise rather faintly marked, rounded fore-wing distinguishes this species from other pugs. It is green when fresh, but fades to yellowish. At rest, unlike other pugs, its fore-wings cover its hind-wings.

It can be found in most of the British Isles, other than northern England and northern Scotland.

Typical habitats are parks and gardens, also hedgerows, scrub and lowland woodland.

There are two generations per year, April to June and mid-July to late August. The second generation is much larger than the first. It over-winters as a pupa underground.

Larvae feed on flowers of various plants, including Dog-rose, Hawthorn, Traveler's-joy, Hemp-agrimony, Bramble, Elder and Goldenrod.

It flies from dusk and is regular in small numbers at light.
