Description

Family: Erebidae

Wing span: 26 - 32mm

This moth has a brown forewing with three dark brown cross-lines. The central one is usually slightly curved, and the outermost is almost straight, extending to the leading edge.

It is well distributed and frequent throughout most of the British Isles, with the exception of northern Scotland.

It is found in broad-leaved woodland, and other places with dense cover, such as hedgerows and gardens.

There is mainly one generation, from June to early August. There can be a partial second generation in the south. It over-winters as a fully-grown larva in plant debris.

Larvae feed on withered leaves, including those of oaks and Beech on the ground, and Bramble.

It flies from dusk and comes to light and sugar.
