(1/640th sec at f11. © David Hastings) Description Family: Erebidae Wing span: 26 - 30mm This moth is often mistaken for a small butterfly when in flight, when its orange-yellow underside can be conspicuous. The main markings on the warm, dark greyish-brown fore-wing are two dark cross-bands and a dark blotch near the tip. It often settles with the hind-wing partly visible. It is fairly well distributed in central southern and south-east England, the south and west Midlands, and South Wales. It is usually found on rough grassland, including downland, hay meadows, woodland rides, and embankments. There is one generation from mid-May to early July. There is sometimes a small second generation in southern England. It over-winters as a pupa. Larvae feed on clovers, Common Bird's-foot Trefoil, Black Medick, Lucerne and Tufted Vetch. It flies by day and is easily disturbed.
