Description

L: 12.5 - 14cm

The Twite resembles the Linnet in size and shape, but lacks the red head patch and breast shown by Linnets and Redpolls. It is brown streaked with black above, and the male has a pink rump. The underparts are buff to whitish, streaked with brown.

In summer, Twite are found in Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia. In winter they move south to the coasts around the North Sea and the southern Baltic.

Breeding habitats are treeless moors and bare coastal heaths.

Like Linnets, Twite feed on seeds all year.

It has Red status on the UK list. Around 10000 pairs breed here, and between 100000 and 150000 birds over-winter in the British Isles.
