Description

L: 39 - 46 cm WS: 62 - 63 cm

The Ring-necked Duck is a North American species of diving duck, which is similar to the Tufted Duck. Males are bold black-and-grey, with a dark peaked head, black back, and grey sides. They have a faint cinnamon neck ring. Adult males have a prominent white ring on the bill. Females are rich brown with a contrasting pale cheek, a white patch near the bill, and a whitish eyering.

This species breeds in northern North America and spend winters in southern and western North America, northern Central America, and the Caribbean. They are regular vagrants in the British Isles, western Europe and Atlantic islands.

Breeding habitats are freshwater marshes, bogs, and other shallow, often acidic wetlands.

This species is of Least Concern (IUCN).
