(1/320th sec at f14. © David Hastings) DescriptionFamily: Nymphalinae Wing span: 52 - 67 mm Slightly larger than the Comma, with less black spotting on the wings. It is mainly found in coastal areas of the Mediterranean. Main habitats are hot rocky slopes and gorges, warm river valleys, dry grassland and dry scrub. It has two or three generations per year. It hibernates as an adult. The main larval foodplant is Eastern Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria officinalis). Red Valerian is a favourite nectar source. It often rests on rock faces or walls, where it basks in bright sunshine. Sightings
