Description

Family: Nymphalinae

Wing span: 63 - 74 mm

The two large eyes on Peacock's hindwings give it its common name. These eyes must be very theatening to any predator that might come across it. Adults can also rub their hindwings together to make a hissing sound. The underside is almost black, providing perfect camouflage when the butterfly is at rest, or when hibernating. The sexes are similar.

It is found throught the British Isles with the exception of northern Scotland.

Peacocks can be seen in a wide variety of habitats, but are most numerous in and around woods.

The Peacock is generally single-brooded. Adults may be seen at any time of the year, with warm weather awakening them from hibernation. However, the majority emerge from hibernation around the end of March. These give rise to the next generation that emerges in the second half of July.

The main larval food plant is Common Nettle. Small Nettle and Hop are also used.

Buddleia is often used as a nectar source in gardens, and thistles and Hemp Agrimony in the countryside.

Peacocks migrate steadily throughout their lives, alternating cross-country travel with periods of egg-laying, feeding and basking.
